Imperialism and Colonization The Heart of Darkness’ author Joseph Conrad’s idea that imperialism has an extensive impact on African natives and their ways of life is entirely correct; along with the idea that imperialism and colonization are simply a guise of a somewhat â€Å"noble cause,† used as a veil to shield underlying problems. This idea is portrayed through Conrad’s use of touching on the time before, the period of, and the era following the harshly imperialized and unnecessary colonization of African natives in their lands. Conrad also used symbolism, imagery, and figurative language to bring light to the surface of what lurks inside of the Heart of Darkness in the Congo and the white man’s burden brought along with it. Antigone character comparison Essay I chose to focus on Creon from Antigone for my second paper. He is a very interesting character to me because he can be perceived in many different ways. For example, one person may view him as a horrible tyrant king due to his unwillingness to alter his decree. Another may see him as a king that made some wrong decisions but was looking out for the best interest of his new city and got more far more punishment than he deserved.I view him as a king who was trying to deal with his insecurities by gaining absolute power. I wondered why Creon had decreed that Polyneices could not be buried. He called him a traitor but it seemed odd that Creon would take such personal offense to his actions. Upon thinking I reached this conclusion; the city was the state and the state in Creons mind was himself. So, when Polyneices attacked the city he was attacking the very throne that Creon was holding. By not allowing him to be buried, the king was showing the rest of Thebes that he was not going to let anyone touch his throne; essentially sending out a warning to everyone lest they too should want to challenge him. He was a king who wanted to rule in absolute authority over his people and was a little scared that something might threaten his ability. This is why I believe he made the decree before he even entered the city and repeated it right after he arrived. He wanted them to know from the very start that he did not want to be challenged. On page 196 he says this, Nevertheless, I say to you at the very outset that I have nothing but contempt for the kind of Governor who is afraid, for whatever reason, to follow the course he knows is best for the State. He shows his desire for this absolute power again when Haimon comes to him and he tells his son that it good to be completely subordinate to him and in everything else according to his (Creons) will. On page 218 he screams out, Anarchy, anarchy! Show me a greater evil!One statement he made cleared up any doubt in my mind, proving that his desire was for absolute power. Ill have no dealings with law-breakers, critics of the government: whoever is chosen to govern should be obeyed, in all things great and small, just and unjust! (p. 217)Creons false pride is the result of his insecurities. He displays them often through out the play. Whenever someone disagrees with him he automatically assumes it is a plot against him. No, from the very beginning there have been those who have wishpered together, stiff-necked anarchists, putting there heads together, scheming against me in the alleys.(to the sentry, p. 201) When the sentry and Teiresias suggest that he might be doing the wrong thing he accuses them both of being paid off as part of a conspiracy against him. When Haimon asked him to change his decree Creon accused him of being sold out to a woman. Even with Antigone he doesnt sentence her until she insults him (p. 209). Creon will not accept the idea that he might be wrong on an issue because if he does in his eyes it would make him a weak king (something he fears being) and that is why he resists changing the law so avidl y. I also noticed that whenever someone made a good point, he would quickly change the subject and accuse that person of treason. His insecurities are further displayed when he denies responsibility for Antigones death twice (pp.212, 227). In the end he gives into his own humanity and stops pretending to know everything. Unfortunately his false pride and insecurities led him to complete disaster but there is hope of him learning this very painful lesson in the end. In conclusion, Creon proves he is quite human in with his insecurities and his delusions. Interestingly enough these attributes caused his downfall as well as almost all dictators (who also desire absolute power). The sales department collects information on the money coming in from sales of the plastic ducks ? this information is taken from the sale of the ducks, which has been stored on computer over the past year. This method enables sales and finance to have free access to the same information. You use this information to create a chart (profit and loss), which shows the strength of the company. The purchase department collects information on the total cost of purchases of supplies and equipment over the year ? this is summarised from the weekly/monthly orders. The finance department collects information of the amount of wages, rent, electricity, and tax the company has paid over the year ? this is taken from the amount the bank has released to pay these payment requests. Recommendations We do not strive to suggest the political and moral responsibility of individuals in public office but rather dwell on an understanding of sexual behavior of men.We strive to impart the k nowledge that America needs to understand the basics of human sexuality before it can gain foothold on a publicized discussion of political sexual scandals. Not only do we uphold media responsibility but strive to insist on legitimacy and credibility of media coverage in sex scandal cases among accused public officials. Such attacks and mudslinging has been associated with an election strategy launched against a potential rival and in the end portray American ignorance.Nor do we support that evidence against sexual scandals be stonewalled, concealed and obstructed. Our main aim is merely to procure an understanding of human sexuality as a human nature and an acceptance of natural responses to consensual sexual behavior regardless of gender and identity. There is also a need for America to exercise a deeper understanding of human sexuality. After a long time of going back in time to experience first hand the stories behind the world's greatest paintings, I decided to take a break in studying visual art and widen my perspectives a bit. I stayed up all night on which adventure to take next, and the all-night contemplation led me to a decision to take another adventure—to take on Architectural artworks. First stop, the world-famous Alhambra in Granada, Spain. I went back 12 centuries in time, all the way to the ninth century—the reign of the Islamic invasion of Spain.The Zirites, who are the first kings of Granada, had the Alhambra constructed for military reasons. They built their castles on the hill across the Alhambra, making the structure a fortress for forthcoming attacks from anticipated conquerors. Tension was in the air at all times during this point, but it didn't stop me from appreciating the beauty of the structure that is Alhambra. Though still not fully developed, its obvious Arabesque style†”a type of Islamic art with repetitive complex, geometric patterns of interlacing plant, animal, and abstract forms—makes it a sight to behold.I have already read in art and history books that the Alhambra as a fortress would go on until the 13th century, so I decided to skip the boring part and take myself to 1238. It was at this point when the Alhambra was used as a residence of the kings. During this time, it was the Nasrites who ruled the Islamic kingdom in Spain. The Alhambra was later on developed to include a â€Å"alcazaba† (fortress), an â€Å"alcazar† (palace) and a small â€Å"medina† (city), still with Islamic art ruling the entirety of the structures.The old fortress was later on restored; the artworks developed to reach the full potential of its beauty. This, in turn, signified the Golden Age of Islam in Spain. Perhaps it was the overwhelming awe over the legendary architecture of the Alhambra and the chills it gave me just by looking at s ome parts of its structural design which transported me to yet another century. Next thing I know, it was 1492, and Granada was no longer occupied by the Islams.Catholicism was brought back to Spain, and the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabel conquered the city, making the Alhambra a Christian court. Military garrisons and churches were built inside the compound, incorporating Catholicism into the Islamic architecture. For centuries the Alhambra turned into a Catholic city built on Islamic roots, but as years passed, the legendary architectural wonder was left neglected. I was then transported to the 19th century, and it shocked me to find the Alhambra unoccupied, except by thieves, beggars, and homeless people.It struck me so hard that in no time I got back to present time. Now, as I am writing this, the Alhambra is already a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a strong contender for the New Seven Wonders of the World. The spots of blood on her face was highly supporting for this murdering view. But despite of all the attempts of the jury, nothing could be found as the true cause of the death. So the Grand Jury finally ruled her death as suicide. The inquest into her death revealed more questions than answers. Many suggested that Thelma may have committed suicide. One of the kings ideas was a public arena as an agent of poetic justice. Crime was punished, or innocence was decided, by the result of chance. When a person was accused of a crime, his future would be judged in the public arena. All the people would gather in this building. During ceremony the king sat high up on his ceremonial chair. He gave a sign. A door under him opened. The accused person stepped out into the arena. Directly opposite the king were two doors. They were side by side, exactly alike. The person on trial had to walk directly to these doors and open one of them. He could open whichever door he pleased. If the accused man opened one door, out came a hungry tiger, the fiercest in the land. The tiger immediately jumped on him and tore him to pieces as punishment for his guilt. The case of the suspect was thus decided. But, if the accused opened the other door, there came forth from it a woman, chosen especially for the person. To this lady he was immediately married, in honor of his innocence. It was not a problem that he might already have a wife and family, or that he might have chosen to marry another woman in the future. The king permitted nothing to interfere with his great method of punishment and reward. The king had a beautiful daughter who was like him in many ways. He loved her above all humanity. The Armadillo is a very different creature. It has tremendous claws, but no fighting instinct. They have teeth, but not in front, except for the milk teeth some have during infancy. They have long tongues because they catch insects. A strange thing which these animals have is a coat armor, unique among other animals. They have bony plate armor on the outside of their bodies'. Each species has a different pattern for every little plate they carry. They all are great burrowers. They sink a hole with them in it as one approaches. It takes a good man to haul even a little one back if it is halfway down it's retreat under the ground.They are active, running with a tiptoe trot. Their trot is as an aged pony that is tired. They have a varied diet. They hunt by night.Today's Armadillos are not the biggest armadillos that have ever existed. The soil of South America is full of larger Armadillo bones from the past. Some of the past bones were as much as sixteen feet long including the tail. Some even migrated to Texas.There are several species of these animals. The Six-banded Armadillos were good burrowers and massive devourers of insects. They also ate vegetable matter and were useful for devouring carrion. One specie called the Peludo was clumsy bet was effective in getting a snake to its armored hide and grinding the life out of it. It then eats the snake not effected by the poison.
